Tanmoy Chakraborty is an Associate Professor in the Dept. of Electrical Engineering, IIT Delhi. He is also an associate faculty of the Yardi School of Artificial Intelligence, IIT Delhi. He is a ACM Distinguished Speaker and was a Ramanujan Fellow from 2018-2023. Before joining IIT Delhi, he served as Associate Professor in the Dept of CSE, IIIT Delhi. He has also served as the head of the Infosys Centre for AI (CAI) at IIIT Delhi before joining IIT Delhi. He obtained his PhD as a Google PhD scholar from the Dept. of CSE, IIT Kharagpur, India in 2015. Following this, he joined University of Maryland, College Park as a Postdoctoral Researcher. His broad research interests include Natural Language Processing, Graph Neural Networks, and Social Computing.

Title of Talk: Combating fake news on social media

Abstract: Online social media platforms are popular mediums for the dissemination and consumption of information. Unfortunately, due to decentralized generation and propagation of content, they also come with limited liability for harmful posts and collusive persuasion. It is often the experience that online users are subjected to a barrage of harmful posts (fake news, hate speech, offensive posts, etc.) within a short span of time. In this talk, I shall present one of our megaprojects, "Project Robinhood", which we envision to be an all-in-one solution to curb the spread of harmful content on social media. In particular, I will present a series of our recent studies on combating hate speech and harmful content. I will discuss how proactive measures can help stop the spread of hate speech even before it is written! The talk will end with a glimpse of other ongoing research at the LCS2 lab.
